The previous chapters should have given you a good understanding of what the Snapshot Agent does. It is involved in the initial synchronization of the database objects and data, and it is primarily responsible for generating database objects and data from the publication database and storing them in the snapshot folder. So how does the Snapshot Agent work I mentioned earlier that agents are essentially SQL Server jobs, and the Snapshot Agent is no exception. It also executes a series of job steps. To see this, open the SQL Server Agent object in the Object Explorer in the SSMS. Then open the Jobs object, and select the Snapshot Agent object for the publication, as shown in Figure 7-4.

Note Snapshot Agents are created for every publication you create. Snapshot Agents are listed as jobs

Close the dialog box to get back to the Job Properties window (shown previously in Figure 7-5). Then click the Cancel button in the Job Properties window to get back to the SSMS (refer back to Figure 7-4). Now, right-click any of the jobs for the Snapshot Agent under the Jobs object in the SSMS, and select View History. This will open the Log File Viewer shown in Figure 7-7. You can save the displayed information for future troubleshooting purposes.

Figure 7-7. Viewing the job history logs Click Close to get back to the SSMS (shown earlier in Figure 7-4). Right-click the job for the Snapshot Agent, and select Properties from the menu. This will open the Job Properties window. Select the Steps page, and you will see a list of the steps that the Snapshot Agent takes. This is shown in Figure 7-8. By default, the agent takes three steps to execute the job: 1. Snapshot Agent startup message. 2. Run agent. 3. Detect nonlogged agent shutdown.

Now let s examine each of these steps. Select the first one and click the Edit button. This will take you to the Job Step Properties window shown in Figure 7-9.

Listing 7-13 shows how to create the necessary certificates on each SQL Server machine. The code also exports the public key of each certificate in a file. The public key in the exported file can then be imported into other SQL Server machines to establish a trust relationship between the different deployed Service Broker services. As you can also see in Listing 7-13, each certificate must be created in the master database and associated with the Service Broker endpoint.
